Super Silhouette - Diesel Art Gallery - Tokyo - 2022
Erin D. Garcia’s Super Silhouette is a collection of pieces that appear deceptively simple. First glance gives the viewer a sense of serenity: the show feels like a comprehensive exploration of ‘still life’ that pays careful attention to all meanings of the word ‘still’.
But if we look any longer than that first moment, we can’t help but question how so much detail can be captured with such minimal brush strokes, how blossoms don’t merely sit but seem to burst from vases. These ‘still lifes’ may capture one moment but they alter our senses of motion and time.
Maybe the show’s name is a clue. ‘Super Silhouette’ is a powerful class of race car, and previous work by Garcia has given nod to motorsports before.
In Super Silhouette we see botanical objects imbued with all the motion and speed of their namesakes, while lying paradoxically still.
Super Silhouette（スーパー・シルエット）
エリン・ディー・ガルシアの「Super Silhouette」は、一見シンプルに見える作品群で、静謐な印象を受けます。この展覧会は「静物」という言葉のあらゆる意味に細心の注意を払いながら、「静物」を包括的に探求しているように感じられるからです。
しかし、その一瞬を見逃すと、なぜ最小限の筆致でこれほど細部まで表現できるのか、なぜ花がただ佇んでいるのではなく、花瓶から飛び出してくるように見えるのか、疑問を抱かずにはいられなくなります。これらの「静物画」は一瞬を捉えているかもしれませんが、私たちの動きや時間に対する感覚を変えてしまうのです。
この展覧会の名前はそのヒントになるかもしれません。「Super Silhouette」はパワフルなレーシングカーのクラスで、ガルシアのこれまでの作品でもモータースポーツにちなんだものがありました。「Super Silhouette」では、その名の通り植物が動きとスピード感を持ちながら、逆説的に静止している様子を感じることができます。
